Shakhnazarov, Karen

Born: 1952 (Krasnodar)
The versatile Karen Shakhnazarov graduated in 1975 from the Moscow School of Cinematography, where he studied under Igor Talankin. Following graduation, he worked for two years at Mosfilm Studios as a Director's assistant. 1980 saw the release of his feature film debut, Kind Men. Over the course of his career he has experimented with a wide variety of genres, from musical comedy to historical drama. Stylistically, Shakhnazarov has successfully used both realism and surrealism in his works. He is often praised for his ability to depict empathetic characters in his films. Mr. Shakhnazarov currently runs his own production company, Kuryer, and has been the president of Mosfilm Studios, which he is credited for revitalizing, since 1998. Over the course of his career Mr. Shakhnazarov has received a multitude of awards, including a People's Artist Award of the Russian Federation.
