Saparov began his film career as a cinematographer. After graduating from the VGIK cinematographers program, he worked on eleven films as cinematographer. He has since directed a number of feature films and over sixty documentaries. Several years older than his fellow "new wavers", his film The Masculine Upbringing received five international prizes in 1982. Ten years later, Little Angel, Make Me Happy ushered a second wave of international recognition for Turkmeni film. A highly emotional film, Little Angel looks at the trauma and tragedy of war through a child's eyes.
