Panfilov, Gleb

Born: 21 December 1934 (Magnitogorsk, Siberia)
First employed as an engineer, Panfilov attended VGIK until 1963 and then took advanced screenwriting courses in Moscow. Though he directed several shorts and student projects, his first feature film was No Path Through the Fire in 1967. Set during the civil war and swollen with allusions to more recent Soviet political history, the film stands with its contemporary, Andrei Rublev, as a passionate appraisal of the artist's role in society. The film made a star of its leading actress, Inna Churikova, and she starred in Panfilov's next film, his internationally acclaimed, Debut. Like Panfilov's previous film, Debut uses the character of an unassuming young artist to explore the ways that art informs our lives. Slyly self-reflexive, in Debut Panfilov played with the fact that his star actress was also his wife. His films continued to impress in Russia and abroad, winning many awards including prizes at the Moscow Film Festival for Vassa, and at Cannes for Mother. Panfilov has written all of his own films, has written screenplays for others, and has directed for the stage (his production of Hamlet was also committed to film).
