When Leaves Fall
Otar Iosseliani, Gruziafilm, 1966; 98m
A documentary-styled story of a young boy named Niko, and his willy-nilly initiation into the adult world with all its travails and temptations, Iosseliani's film is unmistakably Neorealist, but the Italian-identified technique is firmly rooted in the Georgian soil. The setting is a country vineyard, and Iosseliani pays much attention to the winemaking process; numerous non-actors recreating their routines add to the air of staggering authenticity.Back to: Revolution in the Revolution: Soviet Cinema of the 60's
